It's not always extremely clear if your heating and air conditioning systems need to be worked on or replaced. For a lot of people it's evident when the heating or air conditioning doesn't kick on. If you have routine service done to your systems, normally the tech can tell you it's almost time to make the switch.
What if your system needs to be replaced but the signs aren't that clear? This could be the bills creeping up higher than normal. It could also be the house feeling less comfortable than it used to. If your system is old and slowing down, it's going to have to work harder (increasing bills) and may may not be keeping your house as comfortable as it once did!
For this Historic Gardner's Basin town home, it was a easy for the resident to tell there was a problem with their system. Their house seemed colder than usual during the winter, and the bills were creeping up. You would think if you are paying more for heat, you should be warm right? They called Comfort Now by Bob McAllister to come out. When we checked it out we saw they had a very old York 80% system and a 20 year old 40 gallon atmospheric hot water heater that were struggling to keep up with their heating and cooling needs.
20 years is a long time for an HVAC system to last, and it was no surprise that the technology wasn't getting the job done anymore. It was an easy decision for the homeowner to decide they wanted to revamp their heating and cooling situation. There was no point in paying higher bills, with equipment that isn't even getting the job done.
We replaced an old 80% York furnace, a Bryant condenser and a 40 Gallon atmospheric water heater with a new Carrier Comfort Series Furnace and Carrier Coastal Series Condenser and a 40 Gallon Bradford White Atmospheric Hot water heater. These Carrier Units are used for heating and cooling, and can even compliment one another to keep the home comfortable for less. For instance, while the Air Conditioner is running in the summer, the heating unit's fan can be used to circulate the cooler air throughout the home. Newer systems from the same brand can often communicate with each other, making a more comfortable all year round, and using less energy to do it.
The other great advantage to the Carrier Air Conditioning system that was installed was it's coastal design. The Carrier Coastal Units are created to be by the ocean. Salt that makes it's way into the air can land on an air conditioner, and corrode the unit MUCH faster than if it was in a more normal climate. The coastal units have a particular coating on them that makes them resistant to the salt in the air, and will keep the systems working longer than a traditional system would at the shore.
After all was said and done, this Atlantic City resident had a completely new HVAC unit and hot water heater. Now they are more comfortable at home, have new equipment that should last for years to come, and have seen their monthly energy costs go from about $275 a month to $185 a month. This savings will continue for years to come, and the house feels much better! Win - Win if we've ever seen one!
