Each November, we set aside a day to honor those who have bravely served our country as a member of our United States Military...this day is Veterans Day! And last year, we gave away a FREE service call for veterans and their families which went so well, we're doing it again this year! But first, a little history lesson...

Veterans Day began as “Armistice Day” in November of 1919 which was the first anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution outlining an annual observance to honor our military. Nearly 12 years later (in 1938), November 11th was chosen to become a national holiday - now called Veterans Day.

How do we honor our veterans?

Where did the past year go? Just about a year ago we awarded Eileen Cubberley of Somers Point a NEW Heater for having the oldest and ugliest heater submitted to our team and voted on by our loyal friends and followers! And we are ready to do it again...

Eileen and her family enjoyed the winter of 2018-2019 in complete comfort with a new heating system awarded to her after submitting an entry in our 2018 Ugliest Heater Contest. Once she submitted her entry, she was selected as one of our five finalists; which then went on to the public voting round of the competition. Although it was close, Eileen edged out her competition with over 200 votes to become the public’s choice for a new heating system.

Eileen and her family will enjoy their new heating system for many years to come. And we were so happy to provide this awesome family a new heater just before the cold winter months of 2018 that we can't wait to do it again!

Today doesn't feel too bad with a relative humidity around 79 percent...but this summer was brutal! So we thought we'd share some information about how the humidity levels this summer may have impacted your home and how you may not be aware of the damage these dangerous levels may have caused your investment!

It’s been a hot July and last week was a real scorcher...99-100 on the beach! If you’re reading this, you survived our recent heat waves. As for us...we just barely survived!

The Comfort Now Team put out a Herculean effort to respond to so many calls for help with broken or improperly functioning air conditioning systems, that we had a share a few of our favorites. As a team, we got a lot of air conditioners running again for local homeowners in a very short amount of time, but the issues probably could have been avoided in the first place...let me explain! As a homeowner, if you were to consider the enclosed tips to better prepare your home, you may keep from making similar calls to your local HVAC contractor during the next heat wave! As we mentioned, during the extreme weather, we fielded A LOT of calls with similar issues. Here are just a few examples of the calls we received:

The Basic Call for Service

“My AC hasn’t shut off for 2 days...it must be broken”

“It’s 75 (76,78,79,80) in my house...my AC is not working”

“The air coming out doesn’t feel cold...my air conditioner stopped working”

“I have a child, elderly person or pet at home and 78 degrees in my house is too hot for them...please help asap!“

Questions That Were Even Worse

“I have the thermostat set at 66 (65,64….62) and it’s only 69 (70….73)...why is my AC not working?”

“We got to the house at 3:00pm and it was 87 degrees in the house. We turned on the AC, it’s now 9:00pm and my house only cooled to 84 degrees...why is the AC not working?”

If you live here along the Jersey Shore, you know high humidity and excess moisture in the summer months are NOT our friends! But high humidity and increased moisture in your home does not need to be your enemy either...let me explain.

If you can find a way to balance the indoor relative humidity levels in your home, you can also control any increases in moisture and ensure a comfortable, safe environment for you and your family! And here at the shore, this can be more challenging than in other areas of the country...as a local contractor, we know the struggles of dealing with hot, humid days at the shore...

So what is an ideal relative humidity level in your home?

People tend to have different preferences when it comes to what the indoor humidity level should be in their homes to feel most comfortable. In general, a relative humidity level between 35 to 50 percent is ideal for maximum comfort and should prevent unsafe microorganism growth throughout your home - yes, this includes the dreaded mold and mildew we all have to deal with here on the east coast and especially here at the Jersey Shore!

Why should you care about the humidity level in your home?

Great Question! Our comfort is important, but for many, our health is at greater risk in a home with high humidity levels. Here are just a few of the issues we may face if we allow the humidity and moisture in our homes to exceed a safe level...
